How to Type Faster on iPhone
Apr 24, 2026
Typing on an iPhone keyboard is slower than typing on a physical keyboard. There is no way around that. But the gap is larger than it needs to be for most people — because most people are not using all the features that make iPhone typing faster.
Here is what actually works.
1. Turn On One-Handed Keyboard Mode
If you type with one hand and find yourself constantly stretching for letters on the other side, the one-handed keyboard mode moves the entire layout closer to your thumb.
To enable it:
- Press and hold the emoji or globe icon on the left side of the keyboard
- Select the left or right arrow icon to shift the keyboard
To go back to full size, tap the arrow pointing outward.
2. Use Slide-to-Type (QuickPath)
Apple’s QuickPath feature lets you swipe across letters instead of tapping each one. Slide your finger from letter to letter without lifting it off the screen, and iOS will predict the word you are spelling.
This feature is enabled by default. Go to Settings → General → Keyboard and check that Slide to Type is on.
For common words it is significantly faster than individual taps, especially on longer words where the swipe path becomes distinctive.
3. Create Text Replacement Shortcuts
Text replacement lets you type a short abbreviation and have it automatically expand to a longer phrase. This is one of the highest-leverage features for frequent typists.
To set it up:
- Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Text Replacement
- Tap +
- Enter the full phrase under Phrase and your shortcut under Shortcut
Examples of useful shortcuts:
@@→ your full email addressadr→ your home or work addressty→ “Thank you for getting back to me”brgds→ “Best regards”mtg→ “Could we find time for a meeting this week?”
Any phrase you type regularly is a candidate. Ten shortcuts can save hundreds of keystrokes a day.
4. Use Dictation
iPhone dictation has improved substantially and is now fast and accurate for most English speakers. Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard and speak — your words appear as text in real time.
Dictation is particularly effective for longer messages where typing feels slow. Speaking at a natural pace produces text faster than most people can type on a phone screen. You can punctuate by saying “comma”, “period”, “question mark”, and so on.
It works in every app that uses the keyboard, including email, iMessage, and WhatsApp.
5. Learn the Hidden Gestures
iOS has several keyboard gestures that most people never discover:
Undo: Shake the phone to undo the last action, or use a three-finger swipe left.
Move the cursor precisely: Tap and hold the space bar to turn the keyboard into a trackpad. Slide your finger to move the cursor to exactly where you want it — this is much faster than trying to tap precisely on a word.
Select text: While holding the space bar trackpad, add a second finger to begin selecting text. Drag to expand the selection.
Double-tap to select a word: Double-tap any word to select it. Triple-tap to select a sentence.
6. Use Predictive Text More Deliberately
The word suggestions above the keyboard are there every time you type. Most people glance at them occasionally and tap one when it happens to be right. A more deliberate approach is to look at the suggestions before you finish typing and tap early when the right word appears.
With practice, this becomes a quick scan rather than a conscious check, and it reduces the number of letters you need to type for common words significantly.
7. Write Once, Edit Less: Use a Smarter Keyboard
Speed is one dimension of efficient typing. The other is getting the message right the first time, so you are not going back to fix errors, rewrite confusing sentences, or send a follow-up to clarify what you meant.
Omera is an AI keyboard for iPhone that combines typing speed with writing quality. Write your message, tap the AI button, and Omera corrects grammar, sharpens phrasing, and adjusts tone — in seconds. No rewriting, no second-guessing, no follow-up messages to clarify what you meant.
The time saved is not just in the typing itself. It is in every follow-up message you do not have to send because the first one was clear.
A Quick Summary
| Feature | Where to find it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| One-handed mode | Hold globe icon | Typing with one hand |
| Slide to type | Settings → Keyboard | Longer words |
| Text replacement | Settings → Keyboard | Repeated phrases |
| Dictation | Microphone icon | Long messages |
| Space bar trackpad | Hold space bar | Precise cursor control |
| Omera AI keyboard | App Store | Writing quality at speed |
The fastest iPhone typist is not the one who taps fastest — it is the one who types less and communicates more clearly. The tips above help with the first. Omera helps with the second.
